Statement of Faith

The Received Bible Society holds/adheres to the system of theology commonly called "The Reformed Faith," as expressed in the Westminster Confession of Faith, Larger and Shorter Catechisms, the Canons of the Synod of Dort, the Belgic Confession, and the Heidelberg Catechism. We also adhere to the Apostles' Creed, the Athanasian Creed, the Creed of Chalcedon, and the Nicene Creed. A summary of our distinctive beliefs are as follows:

1. The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the verbally inspired, infallible Word of God, the supreme and final authority of our faith and practice.

2. God is one God, Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler of all that exists. He created all things out of nothing, by the Word of His power, in the space of six normal days, and all very good. He is Spirit, light, love, eternal, almighty, infallible, unchangeable, infinite, wise, just, holy, and true. God eternally exists in Three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. These Three are one God, the same in substance, equal in power and glory.

3. The Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, who became man, being conceived by the Holy Ghost in the womb of the virgin Mary. He continues to be God and man, in two distinct natures, and one Person, forever.

4. The first man, Adam, the covenant head of the human race, was made in the image of God. By eating the forbidden fruit, he brought himself and his posterity under God's wrath and curse. All mankind, descending from him by ordinary generation, are totally depraved, guilty, corrupt, and dead in trespasses and sins. None of Adam's fallen race can turn to Christ except by the sovereign, irresistible, effectual call of the Holy Spirit.

5. Before the foundation of the world, God, in His mercy and grace, elected some to eternal life, and in His justice, condemned and passed over others to eternal wrath.

6. God gave His only-begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to bear the sins of His elect. Christ kept the law in their stead. He imputes His perfect righteousness to them. He suffered in their place, became a curse for them on the cross, shed His precious, sacrificial blood to redeem them. He has infallibly, perfectly, accomplished their salvation by His once offering up of Himself a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice.

7. The Lord Jesus Christ was buried and remained for a time under the power of death. He arose on the third day in the same body in which He suffered; yet glorified. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father, making intercession for His people.

8. The Holy Spirit effectually applies the work of Christ to the elect. He convinces them of their sin, opens their hearts to understand the Gospel, and makes them willing to rest upon Jesus Christ alone for salvation. The Spirit of God regenerates, sanctifies and preserves the elect to eternal salvation. The extraordinary gifts of the Holy Spirit, recorded in the New Testament, were evidences of the Apostolic office. These gifts ceased with the passing of the Apostles.

9. The invisible Church consists of all of God's elect, who will infallibly be forever with the Lord. The visible Church, which is universal, consists of all of those who profess the true Christianity of the Bible, together with their children. Jesus Christ is the only Head of the Church. The Pope of Rome contradicts God's Holy Word by his claim to be the substitute of Christ upon earth and head of the Church. The Pope "is that antichrist, that man of sin, and son of perdition, that exalteth himself in the church against Christ, and all that is called God" (Westminster Confession of Faith, XXV, section 6).

10. Jesus Christ shall return at the end of the world to judge men and angels. The elect will be raised to eternal life and acquitted in the day of judgment. They will receive the new heaven and the new earth and be forever with the Lord. The reprobate will be raised to eternal damnation. They will be righteously judged and eternally condemned to hell.
